Guest sentiment
A snapshot of what local diners frequently mention about this location.
"Fantastic spot! Nachos are huge, fish and chips are generous, and the fries regular and sweet potato are delicious. The chicken sandwich was a winner, and the lively crowd makes it feel like a local favorite."
"If you are tired of seafood shacks and so-so food, give this non assuming restaurant a try. I can assure you it's much better than any of the chain restaurants in the Ellsworth area. Our server was great and probably the best we've had in a decade! Desserts are freshly made and awesome as well. If you are passing through or a local, definitely check this place out!"
"The Black Sheep is a bit rough around the edges, but that’s part of its charm. It’s a true hole-in-the-wall restaurant with strong local vibes and friendly service. They were super accommodating to our large party, and Sunday brunch was solid—even though we didn’t realize it was brunch-only."
"The waitress was so polite and attentive, we did not realize they did not have a bartender and ordered drinks. She was so sweet she still got our drinks and nailed it, it was so delicious. Got my usual haddock tacos as always five star deliciousness. When I get the burger I always ask for the aoli for the tocas on it"
"Very cute, small restaurant. Right off of Rt 1, easy access to get into and out of. The restaurant seats about 40 people, and they also have a bar that seats 10. We went for Sunday brunch, and the menu was limited but still had something for everyone. Ordered coffee, it was luke warm but they got us another cup. We all ordered breakfast dishes. The sausage gravy was loaded with sausage. You can't mess up eggs, bacon, and potatoes. The bathroom was clean, but it is small. There is a ramp for a wheelchair. However, the entrance is small, so it may be challenging to get in. Once inside, you can easily move around."
"Arrived before the dinner rush and had excellent service. Nachos are massive and a great value. Fish and chips are also large portions. Fries, regular and sweet potato, were tasty. Classic chicken sandwich got an excellent review. As we were leaving the place filled with a regular crowd. Well worth visiting and eating at"
"The Black Sheep absolutely delivers. From the moment you walk in, the vibe is warm, relaxed, and intentional — the kind of place that knows exactly what it is and executes it well. Now… let’s talk about the Bang Bang Shrimp because WOW. Perfectly cooked shrimp with that light, crispy exterior and a sauce that hits all the right notes — creamy, sweet, a little heat, and dangerously addictive. Balanced, not heavy, and clearly made with care. The kind of dish you think about after you leave and immediately want again. Huge shout-out to Mariah behind the bar — she was fantastic. Friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly in her element. Drinks were spot on, service was effortless, and she added to the overall experience in the best way. Service across the board was on point — attentive without hovering, welcoming, and professional. You can tell this team actually cares about the guest experience. Overall, this is a spot that earns its reputation. If you’re on the fence, go. If you’re already there, order the Bang Bang Shrimp — and grab a drink from Mariah. Legendary."
"Had breakfast and diner there, both were good, recommend the bis units and gravy. I like mine with soft scrambled eggs, the biscuits were exceptional as was the gravy, however the eggs were over cooked and missed the mark. We decided on same place for diner and chose the diner special Steak tips which were indeed as advertised " very good", seasoned well cooked perfect...they had no indoor seating so we ate in the dark outside which got rather chilly. I recommend breakfast as well as diner there...worth it, especially in the area. If management is reading this expand the dining area to west add better bar area maybe fireplace and 6 to 8 more tables...."
